Chapter 17 - The Game
Edward arrives at the Bella’s house to take Bella out to the ball game. Charlie likes him, and even jokes about how Bella must really like him enough that she’d let him take her to a ballgame. Edward arrives in an impressive jeep. They drive through unmarked roads to arrive near the baseball field, and Edward takes her the rest of the way on his back. The entire Cullen family is at the game; Esme referees to try keeping everyone honest, while everyone plays. All seem friendly to Bella except for Rosalie. They play, and Bella understand why they have to wait until a storm to play–just the sound of the bat hitting the ball and their bodies colliding is enough to sound like formidable thunder! Bella also discovers that Esme had jumped off the cliff (not fallen), too depressed over the death of her baby. Alice interrupts the game, suddenly, with a vision. Drawn by the curiosity of the ballgame, the other vampires are approaching. There isn’t enough time for them to disband, so they decide to continue playing, though with the impending danger all the fun has faded. Edward returns to Bella’s side, as Esme takes his place.
