Chapter 8 - Port Angeles
Bella escapes Fork on a girl’s night out with Angela and Jessica to Port Angeles. There, she helps critique their spring dance dress and shoe choices. The shopping goes remarkably quickly, and Bella cites credit to that due to the sparse choices available in the small town. Bella then decides she wants to visit a bookstore, instead of going to the beach with the other two girls. However, the bookstore’s repertoire of typical tourist-ville books–mystic spiritual things–push Bella way. She wanders around town, notices a Volvo, thinks about Edward, and wanders deeper into the lesser side of town, an array of warehouse buildings. There, she’s cornered by a band of derelicts. She contemplates battling them, though she’s realistic about her low chances. Edward arrives in his Volvo just in time. Bella jumps in, and Edward drives off in a fury. He stops to gain control over his fury, asking Bella to distract him, to say anything. Bella starts babbling about how irked she is that Tyler has been telling everyone she’s going to prom with him; she believes the solution to that would be running him over, as, to her, he seems to be reacting out of guilt. Edward is only vaguely amused. They return to Port Angeles, to the restaurant where the girls decided to have dinner at before parting. The two girls had already eaten. They leave, and Ed and Bella dine alone. Bella poses the question of psychic powers to Edward, and Edward–surprisingly–dumps on her his concern for her. They leave and drive away after Edward’s soapbox over his difficult task of trying to protect Bella, whom he claims is actually a magnet for trouble.
