Chapter 7 - Nightmares

Nightmares is primarily a reaction chapter. Bella tries to not think about what Jacob told her out in La Push by listening to a heavy metal CD. She has a nightmare where Jacob, Edward, and Mike are all in it, as well as a wolf. Edward is clearly a vampire in the dream, and he beckons to her with sharp teeth. Bella approaches him, despite that–and suddenly, a wolf jumps and goes for Edward’s throat. Bella wakes up screaming. She’d apparently slept through the night; it’s Sunday morning. She tries avoiding the thought of Edward and vampires, attempts doing a few chores, but ends up looking up vampires on the Internet.

The website opens with two quotes, neither of which are really compelling. The quotes and database seem rather unrealistic, perhaps serving to convey how the real world really doesn’t know much about real vampires–or that vampires have succeeded in keeping their existence quite secret from modern eyes. This non-relation to the common folklore vampires also gives Meyer more space to create her “own” vampires. Bella herself finds her quest silly, and she takes a walk in the woodsy wood outside.

This, along with the previous two chapters, seems to foreshadow New Moon. Namely, the absence of Edward, especially when you’re anticipating him. But, in the woods, Bella ponders about Edward, almost freely–she considers the obvious, that he’s a vampire and dangerous, and thus they should avoid each other. She can’t, though, as she’s already rather enamored by (obsessed with) him, and almost living for his presence. It appears that she’s solidly decided that he’s dangerous, but not bad.

Monday is sunny, and Tuesday as well. The Cullens aren’t at school, but Bella is now signed up with Jessica and Angela on a field trip to Port Angeles…
