Chapter 6 - Scary Stories

In this chapter, Bella is finally made (nearly) directly aware of the fact that Edward might not be your comic book superhero, with his superpowers–but, a vampire. It’s alluded to in a tale told by a Native American teenager who lives on a reservation. The setting is in a beach on Indian land in Washington state, and the story is supposedly a tribal secret. But, Bella’s manipulative flirting with the boy seems to get it out of him. The scary story is that the Cullens are the “Cold One’s,” the natural enemy of their tribal wolf, and a hundred years ago, the Cullens and the tribe had made a pact that they would not set foot there.

While the story itself is not scary for the reader, who is already anticipating a vampire romance, it does reveal more about Bella’s character. Some might say that her tendency to manipulate–albeit with plentiful guilt–is a bad trait, but then again, a too-perfect character is perhaps too unrealistic. Then again, the reader may perhaps have a hard time trying to accept a condemnable trait because the narrative is in first person.

The fun thing is that the guys in Bella’s life all seem rather possessive (to the point of battle) of her. In a romance, that’s a desirable thing even from a first person POV.
