Chapter 5 - Blood Type
Edward ended the previous chapter with an elusive threat and a flawed farewell, “I’ll see you in class.” He doesn’t actually see her in Biology, but instead, sees her at lunch, leaving his own usual table, and signaling her out to sit with him. When Bella mentions her comic book theories, the dramatic irony becomes nearly hilarious, and yet, it’s as Bella would summarize in the next chapter, we’re not really sure about the point of this conversation. Edward then brings up the possibility to her that what if he isn’t a superhero, which, perhaps, lets Bella understand why he’d been avoiding her–but, she concludes that he’s dangerous but not bad. Edward vehemently denies that he’s not bad, and Bella admits, “I just felt anxious, on edge… and more than anything else, fascinated. The same way I always felt when I was near him. (1.5.93)” Their conversation seems to occur apart from time, which flies by–and, the lunch period is over. Edward won’t be following her to class because it’s “healthy to ditch class now and then.”
In Biology, it’s blood type ID day. Bella is apparently someone who both faints at the sight of blood, and also can smell blood. (But, perhaps the latter may have to do with her tapping into Edward’s vampiric abilities somehow[?].) Mike tries escorting her to the school infirmary, but Edward intercepts them and carries her off to the infirmary himself, more or less brushing poor Mike aside.
Edward drives Bella home (despite her protests) in his Volvo. Apparently, he’ll be gone for a three day weekend to Mt. Ranier with Emmett. He asks Bella a favor that Bella’s helpless to accept, “Don’t be offended, but you seem to be one of those people who just attract accidents like a magnet. So… try not to fall into the ocean or get run over or anything, all right?”
This chapter along with the next gives us a taste of Book 2 in advance.
